Report on the Feb. 23 field trip to Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, with pics by Bill Marr.
Peace River Audubon Society had a great field trip to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) this past Saturday. It was attended by 16 Audubon members, 2 of whom were from the Venice Audubon chapter. The group was led by Ruth Brooks who was extremely knowledgeable in the local native plants vs the many exotics. A large native plant nursery exists at the Bailey Tract Homestead which Ruth toured us through. SCCF is the largest private landowner on Sanibel Island. They protect and manage coastal and upland habitats, and monitor water quality for the preservation of ecosystems and species. Their educational programs explore many aspects of what makes Sanibel and Captiva so unique. The most interesting bird sightings were a pair of pileated woodpeckers excavating a nest alongside our walking trail, and a group of redheaded ducks in a local pond. A total of 26 different species were seen.
