About the event
Everyone is invited to this free event where refreshments will be served. Â No reservations need to be made. Jason Thompson will describe the present status of the Florida Scrub Jay and explain how Charlotte County manages this species. There are only twelve locations in Charlotte County that have thriving families of the endemic Florida Scrub Jay in spite of the main hardship of decreasing habitat due to urban development. Â His 2023 survey counted 31 family groups in Charlotte County. Â The species is slowly being extirpated in Lee County and further south but it is holding on in Charlotte County. Â Deep Creek in DeSoto County just to the north has many families and Audubon's Jay Watch will issue a report from surveys in Central Florida on November 4th.
