Field Trips and Walkabouts

General Public Welcome at All Walkabouts and Field Trips

Walkabouts—These easy walks last about two hours and are usually close to home. Walkabouts normally begin at 8:00 AM on the first Tuesday of each month.

Field Trips—These usually take place on the Saturday after the Thursday evening programs. Field trips, which will last from a half day to a full day, also begin at 8:00 AM.

Please join us for the first PRAS meeting of the season on Thursday, September 21. Doors open at 6:15 PM, program at 7 PM. Our program will be on Insect Ecology – “It Really Matters”, presented by Jerry Waters. We will be meeting at a NEW location, the Regional Realtors Education Center on 3320 Loveland Blvd in Port Charlotte. We will be having refreshments, a 50/50 raffle, and have the 2023-2024 Brochure ready to distribute. Don’t forget to bring a $20 donation if you contribute once a year in September. Hope to see you there!

Jerry Waters is a retired science teacher from Arcadia. For most of his career, his teaching responsibilities centered on Chemistry, Honors Chemistry and Dual Enrollment Biology. He has received numerous recognitions as an educator, including the DeSoto County District Teacher of the Year, the WalMart Teacher of the Year for DeSoto County, and a Florida Distinguished Educator award from the University of Florida. Jerry has a B.S. in Biology from Clemson University, and a M.S. in zoology from Auburn University. His primary interests are in the natural history of amphibians, reptiles, and birds, and the conservation / preservation of Florida’s unique and threatened habitats. He is a certified Florida Master Naturalist and Advanced Florida Master Naturalist, and he is a Florida Master Naturalist instructor. He has been an avid nature photographer for over 45 years. He currently keeps busy doing nature photography, giving nature talks, and serving as a Florida Master Naturalist presenter.

Audubon Florida has taken over Eagle nest reporting data from FWC. Many nests were rebuilt but it was a trying year with much recovery form Hurricane Ian which took down many trees and nests in SW Florida.
