We arrived at 8:30 and paid the $3 Don Pedro State Park Fee then headed to the launch ramp. Beautiful weather! We paddled in the inner coastal to a dock then took a short walk to the Gulf beach. Manatees and dolphins swam ahead of us!

Our guides Mike Weinsensee and Leslie Brown

Along the way we learned about Fiddler Crabs (males have big claw) and about 3 Mangrove species. White – white, white, bolts on tight most salt tolerant usually most inland – small propagules – leaves – round tip & 2 nodes at stem and one at tip Red – red, red, pointy head lowest elevation most seaward leafs tear drop propagules – has prop roots look like stilts Black – black, black salty back of leaf (underside lighter in color) has pneumatophores (snorkel roots that stick up from ground to get oxygen).

Photo of Butterfly Mangrove buckeye host plant Red Mangrove shows flower and initial propagules that grow into long beanlike seeds. They float horizontally until they find a spot (just right) then change gravity to the brown end so is sticks in the soil to grow.

Cassiopeia, upside down jellyfish with tiny stingers – In Greek Mythology vain queen Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda was cast to the bottom of the sea so the jellyfish is found at the bottom in shallow areas

Lighting Whelk – snail family with opening on left side

Starfish that we found in Mangrove tunnel

Sandy and Friend at secret lake with the only entrance through the Mangrove tunnel so no motors!

Then we paddled back through the tunnel and back to Don Pedro Dock. So much fun!!! Sandy’s wrist and my right hand made it!Sept 17 2022 PRAS Kayak Field Trip

Please join PRAS for a workday to help celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 24 at 8:30 AM.  Our new bird blind is up and ready for the finishing touches.  Help us celebrate the day by helping install a curtain, hang pictures, do small projects, and share your ideas.  We are preparing for the dedication of the bird blind on October 25.  It will be the Ron Mills Bird Blind in honor of our past president. We need your help! Our workday will be held at CHEC’s Alligator Creek Site at 10941 Burnt Store Rd, Punta Gorda, FL 33955. We will be joining in with CHEC for this workday.  Please call Brenda at 615-477-9067 or email her at bctrackwalker@gmail.com to let us know that you are coming.  Don’t worry if you forget to call, text, or email ahead of time, we can still use your help spur of the moment.  We will be delighted to see you!

Please join the Peace River Audubon Society to kayak the mangroves at Don Pedro State Park on Saturday, September 17, 2022. We will meet at 8:30 AM at 8450 Placida Road, Englewood. Our guide will be Michael Weisensee. We will be traveling through diverse ecosystems depending on our route. We will be birding in an upland habitat looking for migrating species and others like woodpeckers, warblers, and eagles. We will also be in a marsh habitat, looking for wading birds, shorebirds, and marine mammals. The cost for the kayak and guided trip is $50 per person.

Since there is a 1/4 mile walk from the parking lot to the launch site, it is recommended that you rent from Englewood SUP. Please call Nicole at 941-265-2925 to register.

Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, binoculars, and your hat. Hope you can join us for this adventure!

Meet: 8:30AM at 8450 Placida Rd. Guide: Mike Weisensee
