Peace River Audubon is sponsoring a field trip to Myakka River State Park in Sarasota County on Saturday, January 18, 2020. All are invited to join us. This park has several habitats featuring interesting wildlife. Wading birds such as spoonbills, wood storks and limpkin are usually seen along with some shorebirds and ducks. Wild turkey and perching birds can be found in the bushes or woods, and raptors fly overhead. The park is also known for its occasional rarity, and, of course, alligators! We drive through the park to several points of interest. Short walks occur at some sites. The formal part of the trip ends with a picnic lunch near the concession area, after which participants are on their own to take the airboat or tram tours ($20), the canopy walk or other trails we missed, rent bicycles, kayaks, canoes, or head home, possibly on back roads on which Crested Caracara, Bluebirds, Kestrels and more can often be found.
Meet us at 7 AM in the Walmart parking lot near Culver’s, on Kings Highway just north of I-75 exit 170 , or meet us just inside the park in the visitor’s center parking lot near the restrooms at 8:15. The park opens at 8 AM. Please let us know if you plan to join us at the park. Bring binoculars, water, lunch (you can buy lunch in the concession area), sunscreen and hat. There is a $6 per car entry fee to the park.
