Tonya Clayton, PhD, is the author of How to Read a Florida Gulf Coast Beach (UNC Press, 2012). Her fascination with beaches began as a college undergraduate, during a wild, wintry class field trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Here, underfoot, were the signs of shifting inlets and migrating islands, burping beaches and singing sands — all clues to modern and ancient beach stories, all hidden in plain view! She’s been hanging out around salt water ever since.
Tonya’s work as a geologist and oceanographer has taken her from the sandy barrier islands of Portugal to the clear blue waters of the deep Pacific Ocean. Her writings have covered topics ranging from the management of childhood asthma to the measurement of ocean acidity. Her first book, Living with the Georgia Shore, was named an Outstanding Academic Title by the Journal of the American Library Association. Today Tonya works as a freelance science writer and editor from her home base on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Tonya is also a Florida Master Naturalist, an NAI Certified Interpretive Guide, and a fellow of the Florida Natural Resources Leadership Institute. She’s enchanted by natural Florida and is always eager to explore more of it.
