Walkabout at Jelks Preserve

CURRENT TRAIL CONDITIONS: If you are planning to attend the Walkabout this Tuesday (10.06.15), please be prepared for some possible wet trails. Our walk leader will avoid the deep spots on the trail but we should still be prepared for standing water and mud. If you have waterproof or water resistant boots, we highly advise you wear them. These conditions should not affect the birding and good hike we anticipate. We are simply advising you so that you will come prepared. We hope to see you there! For questions please call or email Larry Behrens. Phone: 941-625-5762 or 941-204-1708 Email: behrel@hotmail.comThe first walkabout of Peace River Audubon Society’s 2015-2016 season will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at Jelks Preserve which is located at 2300 N. River Road in South Venice. Hikers will meet in the parking at 8:00 a.m. This preserve is approximately 15 miles from Port Charlotte and can be reached via Hwy. 40 and I-75.

Jelks Preserve is 614 acres in size and is one of Sarasota County’s publicly-owned properties bordering the wild and scenic Myakka River.  The preserve has more than eight-miles of trails, including a 3.3-mile outer loop trail. These trails wind their way through oak hammocks, pine flatwoods and seasonal  wetlands. The list of plants, birds, and other wildlife species is most impressive.

Additional information (trail maps, birds of Jelks Preserve, self-guided tours, and directions to this preserve) may be found here:  https://www.scgov.net/NaturalLands/Pages/JelksPreserve.aspx

It is suggested participants bring water, head cover, insect repellant, snacks, binoculars, and camera. Hike will last approximately 2 hours.

Hope to see you at this beautiful preserve. For more information, please contact Larry Behrens at:
