Field Trip Report – Pinecraft Park in Sarasota

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, thirteen birders went to Pinecraft Park in Sarasota in hopes of seeing migrant warblers.  There were few warblers but many other special sightings. In the parking lot we were treated to the sight of Purple Martins flying overhead.  The Mennonites who live in the neighborhood have erected homes for them.  As we entered the park a flock of many Cedar Waxwings landed in a tall tree at the edge of the park.  The baby Barred Owl had fledged and was sitting in a tree near the trail.  Wood Ducks were also seen in the trees.  The most amazing sighting was getting to see a Ruby-throated Hummingbird sitting on its nest.  The warblers we did get to see were Palm Warblers and Northern Parulas.  All together we saw 22 different species of birds.  This was the last field trip of the PRAS 2016-2017 season.  The final walkabout for the season will be May 3, to Myakkahatchee Environmental Park.
