What an interesting meeting we had Thursday night with FWC’s Senior Wildlife Assistance Biologist, Jayne Johnson. They get about 14,000 calls a year dealing with nuisance wildlife.  Her topic was “How to Cope with Backyard Wildlife”…and discussed everything from bobcats and coyotes to snakes and bats.  Did you know that they even get calls about nuisance Sandhill Cranes and Red-bellied Woodpeckers?  Jayne’s talk was informative and humorous, and her friendly personality shone through.  We had several new people attend who had joined us when Jayne led the Prairie Shell Creek guided walk and had been impressed with her knowledge then.  The bottom line is don’t do anything that will attract wildlife to your yard and don’t be afraid to scare them away if they become a nuisance. Everyone enjoyed her table set up with hands-on objects and information to take home. It is always good to see our PRAS friends and the refreshments are appreciated.  Thanks to all who donated things to make our 50/50 raffle a success.  Hope to see you again at our next meeting about Florida Panthers on March 16th.

What a wonderful celebration we had remembering Ron Mills at the bird blind dedication on Monday, Feb. 13. Mike Bednar, representing CHEC, talked about the history of the old bird blind and it’s replacement. Ron’s wife, Tobi Mills, gave us some insight about his family life and work history. She mentioned how much she appreciated this memorial and having this bird blind in his honor. Mike K. And Bren C. also gave some insight into their friendships with Ron. If you haven’t seen the bird blind lately be sure to stop by!

It was a beautiful sunny morning for our guided walk at Wildflower Preserve and we had a good turnout. Our guides were Michael Weisensee and Eva Furner, both excellent birders, guides, and PRAS members, who are on the staff at Wildflower. The property included upland habitats and salt and fresh water ponds, some that feed into Lemon Bay.  39 species of birds were seen there. You can check out the ebird list below to find the complete list of birds seen. We always enjoy the waterbirds and Michael does an excellent job of explaining their differences. The Purple Martins had just arrived, and we enjoyed flyovers of a Kestrel, Red-shouldered hawk, and Bald Eagle. Thanks to opening the preserve to our Peace River Audubon group.
